Tonsillitis and strep throat are two contagious, common childhood infections that present with discomfort in the throat. The onset of symptoms for both conditions is similar: redness, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. Tonsillitis and strep throat can be caused by viruses or the Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria. If your child frequently suffers from tonsillitis or strep throat, your pediatrician may refer you to an ENT.
The board-certified ENTs at Ohio ENT & Allergy Physicians treat pediatric patients and frequently see cases of tonsillitis and strep throat. One of our pediatric throat and neck physicians will examine your child’s throat and neck and take a throat culture to rule out strep throat. Treatment consists of lots of fluids and rest, along with OTC pain relievers. If the condition is caused by a bacterium, your child will receive a prescription for oral antibiotics. For recurrent bouts of tonsillitis or enlarged tonsils, the ENT may recommend surgery, a tonsillectomy (with or without an adenoidectomy). This is often an outpatient procedure, so your child can typically go home the day of the surgery.
