Typically, hoarseness is caused by benign conditions such as vocal abuse (singing, teaching, excessive public speaking), upper respiratory infections, GERD, LPR, and aging. Other causes are vocal cord nodules, polyps, granulomas, and cancer. The first line of treatment offered by our clinicians is the conservative route, which will consist of self-care to help heal your condition. For chronic hoarseness and laryngitis, self-care recommendations may include quitting smoking or avoiding secondhand smoke and noxious fumes, drinking plenty of water, not clearing the throat, and avoiding prolonged vocal use. With more serious conditions, such as vocal cord paralysis, surgical intervention may be necessary.
