Other Diagnostic Tests (Apart from Skin Testing)

Handheld Spirometry

This form of pulmonary function testing (PFT) measures the volume of air a patient can move in and out of their lungs during a single deep breath. These values are compared to expected levels for a person of the same age, gender, and height. In some cases, your doctor may ask you to repeat the test after using an inhaler to observe any improvement.

Exhaled Nitric Oxide (ENO)

Often performed alongside a PFT, this test measures the level of nitric oxide in a patient’s breath, providing valuable information about the degree of airway inflammation. This is essential for diagnosing asthma and certain non-asthmatic cough conditions.

Patch Testing

Patch testing is used to diagnose allergic contact dermatitis. Similar to allergy skin prick tests, patch tests are typically applied on the back. However, unlike skin tests, patch tests remain in place for approximately 48 hours before removal and later result interpretation.

Punch Biopsy

Rashes that look similar often arise from very different underlying causes. To accurately determine the origin of a rash, a tissue specimen and microscopic examination may be necessary. The team at Ohio ENT & Allergy Physicians offers punch biopsies for undetermined rashes to help guide you to the correct diagnosis and select the most appropriate treatment.
