Getting to Know Dr. O’Brien

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Pasadena, California. My family moved around a lot my first few years – we lived in Denver, CO and Albuquerque, NM before settling in Cleveland, Ohio when I was 5. I grew up in Cleveland and have been a long-suffering Cleveland sports fan.

Did you have any favorite interests/activities when you were a child?

We had a woods and a creek behind my house in Cleveland. My friends and I would “explore” up and down the creek for miles. I was interested in archeology and would often dig for fossils in the woods and by the creek. I thought I might unearth some ancient Indian campground or burial site. Never happened.

If you have children, what are the types of activities they are involved in that keep you busy?

My wife, Autumn, and I have four children. My wife is a pediatrician with her own practice – so we have a full life.

Our two oldest daughters are currently students at the University of Michigan (don’t ask – somehow, someway, something went horribly wrong ... twice).

Our son is going into his sophomore year of high school. He is on the bowling team. He is way better than me at bowling now. I need to work on my hook shot. I have a tendency to throw it hard and straight at the center pin no matter how much I try to curve it.

Our youngest daughter is starting 8th grade. She is active in cheerleading, tumbling, volleyball and track. She keeps us busy.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy running and look forward to doing a few more races as the kids get older. Unfortunately, I am getting much slower as I get older as well – but I refuse to age gracefully and will continue to struggle to recapture ancient imagined glory.

What are your favorite foods/restaurants?

My wife and son have been taking cooking classes together. They make fantastic meals for us. I am actively encouraging them to pursue this hobby.
